Noon (Richard Crenna) is a gunfighter who has become an amnesiac, following an unsuccessful murder attempt. Helped by Rimes (Stephen Boyd), an outlaw who has befriended him, he tries to figure out who he is, what he was doing and why. It gradually appears that his wife and child were murdered. But by whom? And why? As time goes by, Noon also recalls a fortune hidden somewhere. Niland (Farley Granger), a nasty, scheming judge, and Peg Cullane (Patty Shepherd), a greedy woman, who will do anything for money, team up to prevent Noon and Rimes from achieving their end. The soft-hearted Fan Davidge (Rosanna Schiaffino), however, will support them until the bitter end.
